Shadow To Your Silhouette

by Annika Braun, age 13
Shadow To Your Silhouette I am wolf infiltrating the human race, attempting to take it over from within. You don’t believe me, of course you don’t. But that’s the genius of the thing, don’t you see? Some of my favorite foods are donuts and raspberries, my favorite color is black, I enjoy reading and drawing, and you should listen to Fall Out Boy. (If you wish to bow down to me ahead of time, watch me on my deviantart account, Spookachi, and you have a chance at being promoted to a high rank in my future dystopia).

“I was the shadow of your silhouette

Then the sun slipped into the simmering sea

Like a delicate egg being hardboiled

And we became crepuscular”

You stood with your back to the sunset

Your bold silhouette cutting a piece of color from the brilliant blood orange sky

I snapped a picture, the one behind the shutter

I was the shadow of your silhouette

Then the sun slipped into the simmering sea

Like a delicate egg being hardboiled

And we became crepuscular

The twilight blended my shadow and your silhouette

Almost as well as photoshop blended your face into the background

Why can’t photos fade along with memory?

Slicing deeper than papercuts when they spill from dusty boxes

Deeper than the scars running like pale pink lace across your wrists

You fall with your back to the ground

Your broken silhouette cutting a piece of color from my life
